Sony has launched the Alpha 7R VI camera and FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS lens in Australia, alongside the XLR-A4 audio adaptor for on-camera recording.

The Alpha 7R VI is the sixth model in Sony's Alpha 7R line and sits at the top of the company's high-resolution mirrorless range. It carries an Australian recommended retail price of AUD $6,999. The lens is priced at AUD $7,399, while the XLR-A4 adaptor is set at AUD $1,099.

The camera combines a 66.8-megapixel full-frame sensor with Sony's BIONZ XR2 image processing engine and is aimed at photographers and video users working across sport, wildlife, portraiture and landscape shooting.

Headline specifications include continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second, autofocus and auto exposure calculations at up to 60 times per second, and 8K video recording. It also supports full-frame 4K recording at 60p and 120p without crop.

Sony has placed particular emphasis on subject recognition and tracking. The Alpha 7R VI includes an AI processing unit and what the company calls Real-time Recognition AF+, with skeletal-based human pose estimation designed to improve focus tracking on moving subjects.

Stabilisation is another focus. The camera uses 5-axis optical image stabilisation rated at up to 8.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the periphery. The body also includes a 9.44 million-dot OLED viewfinder, illuminated rear buttons for low-light use and a four-axis multi-angle LCD monitor.

For longer assignments, a new NP-SA100 battery is rated for up to 710 still images when using the LCD monitor or 600 through the viewfinder under CIPA standards. Sony also says the body's heat management allows uninterrupted 8K movie recording for up to 120 minutes.

Authenticity push

Sony has built support for its Camera Authenticity Solution into the Alpha 7R VI, including compatibility with the C2PA standard. The feature is intended to let organisations verify that still images and video were captured in-camera rather than generated by artificial intelligence, an issue of growing importance for newsrooms and content publishers.

The XLR-A4 adaptor expands Sony's audio offering for video production. It supports up to four-channel digital audio recording in-camera on compatible models and allows connection of XLR microphones, as well as 3.5 mm stereo mini jack microphones, through Sony's Multi Interface Shoe.

On supported cameras, the adaptor records digital audio at up to 96kHz 32-bit float in four channels. The format is designed to reduce the need for manual gain adjustment on location and lower the risk of distortion in unpredictable recording conditions.

It can also operate as a 96kHz 24-bit two-channel audio interface when connected to a PC through USB Audio Class 2.0. Sony says it has a lower-profile design and reinforced chassis compared with the earlier XLR-K3M.

New telephoto lens

Alongside the camera, Sony has introduced the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS, a super-telephoto zoom lens for full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. It covers a 100-400mm focal range with a constant F4.5 aperture and is aimed at photographers working in wildlife, birding, sports and photojournalism.

The lens weighs about 1,840g and uses an internal zoom design, meaning its length stays constant while zooming. Sony says that helps maintain balance during handheld use and supports more stable framing.

Its optical construction includes ED XA, XA, Super ED and ED glass elements intended to control chromatic and spherical aberration across the zoom range. Sony says the lens is designed to maintain detail from centre to edge even when used wide open at F4.5.

Autofocus is driven by four XD Linear Motors and a floating focus mechanism. According to Sony, the lens delivers autofocus speeds up to three times faster than the FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS, with subject tracking improved by about 50%.

The lens is also compatible with the Alpha 9 III's continuous shooting mode at up to 120 frames per second with AF and AE tracking, according to Sony. Other features include built-in stabilisation, focus hold buttons, a dedicated function ring and a dust- and moisture-resistant design with a fluorine coating on the front element.

Accessory line-up

Additional accessories for the Alpha 7R VI include the NP-SA100 rechargeable battery pack, the VG-C6 vertical grip, the BC-SAD1 battery charger and the DC-C2 DC coupler. Sony says the battery offers about 1.3 times the capacity of the NP-FZ100 Z-series battery.

The vertical grip can house up to two SA-series batteries, while the dedicated charger can charge two batteries simultaneously in about 115 minutes when used with a USB Power Delivery source of 45W or higher. The DC coupler is intended for continuous external power with a 100W or higher USB Power Delivery source.

The launches expand Sony's Alpha system as camera makers try to serve both stills specialists and hybrid creators on a single platform. In Australia, the Alpha 7R VI is priced at AUD $6,999, the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS at AUD $7,399 and the XLR-A4 adaptor at AUD $1,099.
