ChatGPT tops Apple’s 2025 app & game charts in Australia
Apple has released its annual lists of the most downloaded apps and games in Australia, highlighting a year dominated by AI chat tools, government services, video editors, online shopping platforms, and sandbox-style games.
The rankings cover free and paid titles on iPhone and iPad, along with Apple Arcade games. The lists appear in the Today tab on the App Store on iPhone and iPad.
ChatGPT topped the free iPhone apps chart in Australia in 2025. The same app also led the free iPad apps list. The result underlines strong local interest in consumer-facing artificial intelligence services.
On iPhone, the federal government's myGov app was the second most downloaded free app. Social video editor CapCut ranked third. Chinese shopping platforms Temu and AliExpress also featured in the top 10, alongside Meta's Threads and services from Google, WhatsApp, TikTok and Ticketmaster.
WikiCamps Australia was the top paid iPhone app. The app focuses on travel and camping information. Secure messaging app Threema ranked second among paid iPhone apps. Public transport tool TripView and specialist apps such as Monash FODMAP Diet, Rain Parrot and AutoSleep Track Sleep on Watch also appeared in the paid rankings.
On iPad, creative and education tools led the paid app list. Procreate was the most downloaded paid iPad app. Digital book creation app Book Creator for iPad ranked second. Procreate Dreams, WikiCamps Australia, Nomad Sculpt and forScore also made the top 10. Education and learning tools such as Teach Your Monster to Read and PicCollage EDU Collage Maker appeared in the same list.
Among free iPad apps, video and streaming services were prominent. ChatGPT held the top spot. Netflix and YouTube followed. Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and HBO Max: Stream Movies & TV also ranked. Creative and productivity tools such as Simply Draw: Learn to Draw, Canva: AI Photo & Video Editor, Google Chrome, and Spotify: Music and Podcasts rounded out the top 10.
Games rankings
Block Blast! was the most downloaded free iPhone game in Australia. Clash Royale and Roblox followed in the free iPhone games list. Township and Pokémon TCG Pocket also ranked in the top five. Casual and puzzle-style titles such as Last War:Survival, Colour Block Jam, Vita Mahjong, Kingshot and Subway Surfers completed the top 10 free iPhone games.
Minecraft: Dream it, Build it! led the paid iPhone games chart. Card-based title Balatro ranked second. Strategy and simulation title Plague Inc. appeared in third place. Party game Heads Up!, tower defence game Bloons TD 6, farming simulation Stardew Valley, action title After Inc., platformer Geometry Dash, Red's First Flight, and digital board game MONOPOLY also featured in the paid iPhone games top 10.
On iPad, Block Blast! was again the top free game. Roblox followed in second place. Music title Magic Tiles 3: Piano Game and casual titles Perfect Tidy and Mini Games: Calm & Chill also made the top ranks. Offline Games - No Wifi Games, Snake Clash!, Hole.io, Paper.io 2 and Clash Royale rounded out the free iPad games list.
The paid iPad games chart was also led by Minecraft: Dream it, Build it!. Geometry Dash and Stardew Valley ranked next. Bloons TD 6 and Balatro appeared in the top five. Plague Inc., Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp C, Papa's Freezeria HD, horror title Poppy Playtime Chapter 3, and unpacking-themed game Unpacking completed the paid iPad games list.
Apple Arcade titles
Apple also highlighted the most popular Apple Arcade titles among Australian players. Hello Kitty Island Adventure topped the Apple Arcade list. Action title Snake.io+ and open-world game Sneaky Sasquatch followed. Balatro+ and NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition also appeared among the leading Arcade downloads.
Other Apple Arcade entries in the Australian list included Bloons TD 6+, Fruit Ninja Classic+, PGA TOUR Pro Golf, Solitaire by MobilityWare+, and UNO: Arcade Edition.
App Store Awards
Alongside the download charts, Apple's App Store Editorial team recently named the winners of the 2025 App Store Awards. The awards recognised 17 apps and games across several categories.
Two of the winners came from New Zealand developers. Explore POV by James Hustler received Apple Vision Pro App of the Year. Fishing adventure game DREDGE by Black Salt Games received iPad Game of the Year.
Apple said the award winners reflected the diversity of experiences on its platforms.
"The 2025 App Store Awards winners show how developers across our region are creating apps and games that resonate with users in their daily lives," said Lucy Botham, Public Relations Manager, Apple.
