Snap launches Specs unit to drive smart glasses push

Fri, 30th Jan 2026

Snap has created a new subsidiary called Specs as it prepares to launch a smart glasses product line later this year.

The company said Specs is a wholly owned subsidiary within Snap. Snap said the move creates a separate structure around its eyewear work and its associated brand.

Corporate Structure

Snap said the new structure gives the business greater operational focus and alignment. Snap also pointed to partnerships and capital flexibility, including the possibility of a minority investment. The company said a separate subsidiary creates clearer valuation ahead of the planned public launch.

The company has worked on smart eyewear for more than a decade. Snap positioned Specs as part of a wider push towards what it described as a more human form of computing.

Specs uses transparent lenses that overlay digital objects in three dimensions. Users interact with the system using hands and voice.

Snap said developers already build experiences for Specs. The company described use cases that span learning, entertainment, and work in a setting that remains linked to the physical world.

Product Direction

Snap contrasted Specs with traditional devices such as computers and smartphones. It said those devices can capture attention and reduce in-person interaction.

Snap said Specs aims for shared experiences while users stay present in their surroundings. The company described examples including games played outdoors, interactive simulations for learning, and collaboration on virtual product designs in a shared space.

AI Focus

Snap framed the launch as coming at a time of rapid change in how people interact with technology. It said artificial intelligence is altering user expectations and interaction patterns.

Snap said Specs uses what it called an intelligence system that understands the user and their environment. The company said the system helps complete tasks on a user's behalf. Snap also said the approach prioritises privacy and security.

Snap set out an ambition for the product line. It said: "The goal is to create a computer that people use less, because it does more for them."

Waste Reduction

Snap also described longer-term potential for Specs related to physical consumption. It said digital experiences can replace some physical objects and reduce waste over time.

The company listed items it said could be recreated digitally through Specs. The list included whiteboards, instruction manuals, televisions and toys.

Snap said the technology industry is due for a shift in how computing devices fit into people's daily lives. It pointed to a new computing paradigm. It said that approach puts people first and strengthens real-world connection. It also said it anticipates user needs and reduces environmental impact through substitution of physical goods with digital ones.

Hiring Plans

Snap said the new subsidiary is recruiting. Specs is hiring for close to 100 roles globally.

The company did not provide details of locations, job functions, or senior appointments linked to the new structure. It also did not state whether the roles sit within engineering, product, developer relations, operations, or sales.

Snap plans to share the next generation of Specs later this year.
