WP Engine has made its Smart Search AI tool available to all WordPress websites, expanding a product previously limited to its own hosting customers.

The product is designed to replace standard keyword matching with semantic search that interprets meaning and context. According to WP Engine, this helps websites return more relevant results when users enter long phrases, vague terms or queries with typographical errors.

It is aimed at organisations running large websites with extensive content libraries or product catalogues, where visitors often rely on a search bar to find specific information. On-site search users typically show stronger purchase or engagement intent than visitors who are only browsing, the company said.

WP Engine, which says it serves more than 5 million WordPress websites, is positioning the wider rollout as a way to reach site owners beyond its managed hosting base. Brands using its products include Pandora, Experian, Equifax, VMware, HubSpot and Dell.

Search shift

The launch comes as website operators reassess search tools in response to changing user expectations shaped by AI-based consumer services. Traditional site search systems often rely on exact keywords, which can produce weak results when users phrase queries differently from the way content appears on the site.

Smart Search AI indexes new and updated content in real time and runs on external infrastructure rather than in a customer's own site environment, according to WP Engine. The approach is intended to reduce the operational burden for organisations that want to improve search without changing their website's underlying structure.

The product is built for WordPress and is compatible with Advanced Custom Fields and WooCommerce. It can also be integrated with headless WordPress environments through WPGraphQL and REST APIs, WP Engine said.

Alongside the wider availability of the core search tool, the plugin includes access to the Smart Search AI MCP Server, which is in open beta. This allows organisations to expose live site content to external AI agents in real time, according to the company.

Commercial case

The business case for improved search is closely tied to conversion and retention. In material accompanying the launch, WP Engine cited research showing that 80% of consumers have left a website because the on-site search experience was inefficient.

That matters especially for retailers, publishers and service businesses with dense content structures, where poor search can hide products, articles or support information from visitors already looking for them. For many site owners, search has long been treated as a background feature rather than a core part of the customer journey.

Ramadass Prabhakar, Chief Technology Officer at WP Engine, said the company sees search as a neglected part of the website experience.

"Search is one of the most overlooked parts of the digital experience, yet it has a big impact on how people engage with content on a site," said Ramadass Prabhakar, Chief Technology Officer at WP Engine. "With Smart Search AI, we're making one of our most powerful tools accessible to the whole WordPress community, helping to drive higher engagement, lower time-to-conversion, and create better customer experiences."

The tool is intended for marketing, content and development teams that want more control over how search behaves on their sites. It can be configured through a user interface rather than requiring teams to build a custom search engine from scratch.

Customer example

Existing users include outsourcing and facilities management group Mitie, which used the search tool during a redesign of its website. According to WP Engine, customer interviews during the project highlighted difficulty finding content through the site's previous search experience.

"During our most recent redesign, we interviewed our top customers, and a main concern was that they couldn't easily find what they were looking for on our website," said Melanie Clarke, Website Manager at Mitie. "They would often exit when their searches didn't yield results. Smart Search AI has greatly improved customer-led user journeys across our site, so our content can create more engagement, not more frustration."
