Tue, 29th Oct 2024

Victoria's technology workforce has seen a 9.75% increase in 2023, surpassing the national average growth rate of 9%, as detailed in the 2024 ACS Digital Pulse report.

The annual report, prepared by Deloitte Access Economics for the Australian Computer Society, indicates that over 306,000 individuals in Victoria are now employed in technology-related roles, marking the state's strong position in the digital sector.

The forecast from the report anticipates that more than 393,000 people will be employed in the Victorian tech sector by 2030, a reflection of the state's progressive efforts to sustain a vigorous technology ecosystem.

Since the launch of the first Digital Pulse report in 2015, Victoria's tech workforce has risen by more than 70%, progressing from 180,000 to its current figure, highlighting the critical role of technology in bolstering economic growth and industrial advancement across the region, spanning from startups to large enterprises.

Dr. Rod Dilnutt, FACS, commented on Victoria's advancements.

"Victoria's tech workforce has demonstrated exceptional growth over the past decade, and the future looks even brighter."

He further added, "The initiatives being implemented by the state government will ensure that our talent pipeline remains strong and competitive. These efforts will empower our tech professionals to drive innovation and help Victoria maintain its status as a global leader in technology."

The national landscape as per the 2024 Digital Pulse report shows that Australia's technology workforce is experiencing a significant surge, with over one million individuals employed in IT roles across the country. However, there remains a gap in business AI adoption, and the demand for enhanced digital and cybersecurity skills remains critical.

The report also highlights several key points: Australia's tech workforce has expanded by over 60% in the last decade, with an anticipated requirement of 1.3 million technology workers by 2030. IT has contributed GBP £66 billion to economic activity in the fiscal year 2023, and technology exports hit GBP £4.27 billion last year, demonstrating a substantial increase of 400% since 2014.

Diversity continues to present challenges within the sector, with females making up only 29% of the workforce, and boys are four times more likely than girls to consider a technology career.
