Udemy launches AI MCP Server to boost upskilling in workflows

Thu, 31st Jul 2025

Udemy has announced the launch of its new Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, a tool designed to integrate personalised, AI-powered upskilling directly into employees' existing workflows.

The MCP Server was developed by Udemy's Innovation Studio to provide targeted learning opportunities by embedding learning assets within the AI applications already used in many organisations, including platforms such as Claude and ChatGPT. This approach is intended to allow employees to acquire new skills without interrupting their regular duties or switching between multiple platforms.

According to Udemy, integrating skills development into everyday workflows can help address productivity challenges currently faced by employers, particularly in Australia. Peter Kokkinos, Vice President and Managing Director Asia Pacific at Udemy, said:

Australia is facing a clear productivity challenge, and one of the biggest levers we have is upskilling. By incorporating learning directly in the flow of work and the tools employees already use, we can ensure upskilling happens in real time. Udemy's MCP Server will help organisations close skills gaps faster, lift performance, and make every moment on the job more productive. It's not just about upskilling, it's about working smarter, every day.

Udemy claims it is the first global reskilling platform to introduce agentic AI workflows for businesses, combining automated upskilling recommendations with a library of curated educational content.

The new server is built on the MCP, which was developed by Anthropic. Organisations can now use the MCP to find Udemy training materials within their current AI tools, supporting skills development that fits into existing work patterns. This is designed to avoid the productivity loss often associated with traditional, standalone elearning systems.

Hugo Sarrazin, President and CEO at Udemy, commented on how the MCP Server addresses a broader industry challenge:

Companies, especially large enterprises, are making significant investments in AI tools, but the real challenge is making those tools useful in day-to-day work. The Udemy MCP Server helps bridge that gap by bringing the right learning to the right person at the right time, directly inside the platforms they're already using. We're excited to keep providing our customers with innovative products that can help them optimise reskilling opportunities, keep pace with AI transformation, and continue to anticipate what's next.

Traditional online learning often requires employees to step away from their core tasks and workflows, leading to what is described as a fragmented and inefficient experience. A recent IBM survey found that half of all business leaders consider fragmented technology stacks a significant barrier to realising returns on investment.

Key features of the Udemy MCP Server highlighted by the company include on-demand support, plug-and-play integration with existing AI platforms, intelligent content matching, and the ability to tailor recommendations to specific job roles and organisational priorities.

The on-demand support capability provides employees access to micro-courses and curated lessons to help with immediate challenges, allowing them to upskill precisely when the need arises. The plug-and-play integration is designed for simplicity, with pre-built connectors that remove the need for new software development or major system changes - important for enterprise clients concerned with data security and privacy.

The server also allows for intelligent content matching, with users able to search and discover training courses directly from the tools they routinely use, including coding platforms and customer relationship management systems. Additionally, training recommendations can be tailored to the specific responsibilities and requirements of each employee. For example, team leaders dealing with interpersonal challenges can access relevant management or emotional intelligence training directly, or use AI Role Play simulations to improve their communication skills further.

Udemy positions this release as validating its focus on skills development that is scalable and delivered at the point of need. The aim is to support businesses in achieving measurable outcomes while maintaining employee productivity.

The MCP Server will be made available to a select group of Udemy Business customers and partners through an Early Adopters Program prior to a wider release. This programme will allow these organisations to test the new features and provide feedback to guide further development to meet a range of market requirements.
