Temu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition to enhance cooperation on intellectual property protection and counteract online counterfeiting.
The agreement formalises Temu's participation in the IACC's Marketplace Advisory Council, which is designed as a cross-industry forum comprising online marketplaces, payment providers and global brands. The council aims to establish a collaborative framework to improve the industry's response to counterfeit products sold online.
Bob Barchiesi, President of the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, welcomed Temu to the new initiative, stating, "We're pleased to welcome Temu as an inaugural member of the Marketplace Advisory Council and as a key partner in our shared fight against counterfeiting. This MoU reflects a meaningful step forward in our collaboration, grounded in transparency, accountability, and a joint commitment to consumer protection. The IACC created the MAC to bring stakeholders together in a way that drives real, sustained impact—and Temu's participation helps strengthen that vision."
The Marketplace Advisory Council serves as a platform for e-commerce businesses, financial services providers and brands to collaborate, share best practices, and explore collective approaches to the ongoing challenge of counterfeit goods in the digital economy.
Temu, a global online marketplace, has outlined a series of measures it has adopted since launching in 2022 to enforce intellectual property rights. These initiatives include in-depth seller vetting processes, compliance training, 24/7 algorithmic monitoring in combination with manual review, and the establishment of a dedicated intellectual property protection portal and brand registry to facilitate takedown requests. The company has also organised an internal enforcement team tasked with handling IP infringement claims efficiently and precisely.
A Temu spokesperson commented on the development, saying, "Joining this coalition underscores Temu's commitment to building a trustworthy online marketplace. We look forward to collaborating with other industry leaders to create a powerful, collective force against the sale of illegal goods online."
The council's membership includes various stakeholders from the online retail, payments, and brand sectors. Alongside Temu, founding participants include Amazon and eBay, as well as payment providers such as Mastercard, PayPal, and Visa. Global consumer, technology and lifestyle brands like Apple, Chanel, Colgate-Palmolive, Disney, Ford, Johnson & Johnson, and Nike are also represented on the council.
The collaborative initiative is expected to offer members the opportunity to work together, pool insights, and devise strategies to deal with the increasing challenge of counterfeit goods being traded on digital platforms. Through the unified efforts of e-commerce platforms, financial services companies, and international brands, the council aims to promote best practices for intellectual property enforcement and consumer protection.
