Cold storage warehouses to benefit from new automated guided vehicles
Thu, 29th Jun 2023

Dematic, an automated solutions company, has launched its third-generation automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that are specifically rated for freezer environments. The announcement was made today, highlighting that these AGVs are designed and built in Australia and feature sensor and navigation technology that meets the recently updated global safety standards.

The introduction of AGVs into cold storage facilities is aimed at mitigating the health risks and logistical challenges associated with employing human labour in such environments. Tony Raggio, General Manager Sales – Dematic ANZ Mobile Automation, mentioned, “Cold storage facilities are harsh environments for workers, creating a range of occupational health and safety risks that lead to many injuries per year.” He further noted the complexity of managing safety checks and restrictions necessary for protecting workers in freezer environments.

SafeWork NSW has documented that working in extremely cold conditions increases risks to workers’ health and safety, with potential issues ranging from fatigue to more severe conditions like hypothermia and frostbite. With the deployment of AGVs, which can operate at temperatures as low as -25°C, companies can mitigate these risks and maintain productivity, as the vehicles can work continuously in freezer environments.

Dematic’s third-generation AGVs have been developed with safety as a priority. The vehicles include a 360° safety scanning system which can automatically slow down and stop the vehicle, easily accessible emergency stop buttons, and both visual and audible warning systems. Additionally, they incorporate redundant safety-rated features ensuring compliance with the Australian Standard - AS 5144-4, which is equivalent to the international standard ISO 3691-4.

Raggio explained that the updated standards clarify which functions of an AGV need to be addressed to ensure safety and avoid accidents. Dematic's new AGVs are built in accordance with these standards.

It’s worth noting that while Dematic is an established player in the automated solutions market, they are not the only provider globally. However, they are currently the only manufacturer of freezer-rated AGVs in Australia.

Dematic, a member of the KION Group, has a presence in over 35 countries and has been part of the initiative in developing updated safety standards for AGVs globally.

In summary:

The third-generation freezer-rated AGVs launched by Dematic represent an attempt to address the challenges of operating in cold storage environments, providing an option that could reduce health risks to human workers and streamline operations in such facilities.
