Australia Post launches largest trial of electric delivery vans

Thu, 21st Aug 2025

Australia Post has begun a pilot programme with 36 electric delivery vans, marking the largest trial of this kind in the organisation's history.

The pilot introduces Mercedes-Benz eVito vans into Australia Post's delivery network, expanding on an existing electric vehicle fleet that already includes over 5,000 vehicles. The eVito vans will be dedicated to metropolitan areas, chosen for their suitability to high-frequency, short-distance delivery routes typical in busy city environments.

The objective of the pilot is aligned with Australia Post's broader commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. The newly added electric vans do not produce tailpipe emissions and will be powered through charging infrastructure supplied with 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Pilot details

Australia Post confirmed that this marks the first time it has trialled electric vans at this scale, marking a step forward in its transformation towards more sustainable delivery practices. The pilot is intended to address operational and environmental goals as parcel volumes continue to rise, largely attributable to the country's fast-growing eCommerce sector.

Australia Post Chief Sustainability Officer, Richard Pittard, said,

"The introduction of electric vans is an important milestone in our fleet electrification and decarbonisation strategy. With more Australians shopping online than ever before, we're delivering more parcels every day and we know we need to find more sustainable ways to do it."
"This is our largest electric van trial to date. It's a meaningful step forward as we continue building a modern, sustainable delivery network that meets the evolving needs of our customers while reducing our environmental impact."

The company will continue the rollout over the coming months. Australia Post is working in partnership with Mercedes-Benz to provide training for team members and ensure a smooth transition to operating the new electric vehicles.

Context and sustainability strategy

The adoption of 36 new electric vans is a part of a wider effort to transform the organisation's delivery fleet and operational model. The company has already established itself with one of the largest electric vehicle fleets in the region, and the pilot is expected to provide valuable data and operational insight for future investments in electric vehicles and supporting infrastructure.

Australia Post's sustainability strategy includes ongoing investments beyond the scope of vehicles, focusing on delivering a long-term environmental plan. The company is seeking to balance increasing delivery volumes and a national delivery footprint while reducing its environmental impact.

Training and operational adjustments

The transition to electric vans requires team members who are trained to handle the new vehicles, as well as adjustments to the delivery network to maximise efficiency. Mercedes-Benz is collaborating with Australia Post to support these operational changes, ensuring the new vehicles meet the business's day-to-day needs.

Broader environmental goals

This pilot is an initial stage in a process that is expected to see further expansion of electric vehicles and supporting infrastructure, such as renewable energy-powered charging stations across Australia Post's delivery depots.

The company has identified transportation and delivery operations as a significant component of its environmental impact. It is positioning the pilot as an example of commitment to reducing emissions across a large-scale network servicing metro areas.

Australia Post continues to track and report its progress towards Net Zero emissions by 2050 as part of its corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability programme.
