Women in Security Network wins global diversity award
The Women in Security Mentoring Network, a collaboration between the Australian Women in Security Network, Australian Signals Directorate, and OK RDY, has received global recognition for its efforts in promoting diversity within cybersecurity.
The initiative clinched the 2024 Global Award for Best Diversity Initiative at the World Innovation and Technology Services Alliance Global Congress & Awards. Competing against contributions from more than 80 countries including major tech hubs such as the USA, UK, and Canada, the Network's AI-powered mentorship model was highlighted as an effective solution to workplace diversity challenges in the cybersecurity realm.
Australia's cybersecurity workforce has an evident gender gap with women making up only 17% of the sector. Jacqui Loustau, Founder & Executive Director of the Australian Women in Security Network stated, "We don't just need more cybersecurity talent—we need a workforce that reflects the society we protect. This initiative is proving that targeted mentorship and career development can make a real impact in diversifying the industry."
The shortage of skills in cybersecurity in Australia is a national security concern, making the push for a diverse workforce even more pressing. The program's platform utilises AI to match aspiring security professionals with mentors, aiding them in skill acquisition and career development.
Tim McKay, Founder & CEO of OK RDY, remarked, "This isn't just another networking program—it's a movement that's driving real workforce change. By leveraging AI-driven mentorship, we're not only bridging the skills gap but also creating a stronger, more inclusive security industry."
An ASD spokesperson stressed the significance of diversity for national capability. "Diversity isn't just about representation—it's about capability. To meet the cybersecurity challenges of the future, we need a broad and talented workforce. Initiatives like this play a vital role in developing that pipeline."
The Network's program has already created a substantial positive impact, facilitating thousands of mentorship interactions. A reported 94% of mentees felt increased confidence in their skills and career direction, and 97% had a clearer understanding of their career path through the initiative.
A mentee shared, "Just reading the mentor profiles and hearing about their different paths to success within the security industry is inspiring and encouraging." The initiative employs an app-based approach to mentorship matching, described by a mentor as "far superior to other social and professional networking sites." Another mentee commented on their experience of building a network with "amazing people who I most likely would not have met."
The Network established Australia's first national mentoring program focused on connecting and supporting women in security throughout the country. It provides a platform for career development through mentorships, leadership stories, and self-paced learning materials, aiming to demystify career pathways and enhance skills with the aid of technology.
