Why Australian enterprises can no longer afford to ignore the log management problem

Across Australian enterprises, observability has quietly become one of the fastest-growing - and least scrutinised - items on the IT budget. Analysts now report that more than half of all observability spending goes exclusively to log management. For organisations with mature environments, that figure translates to well over one million dollars per year, growing at approximately 40 per cent annually. Yet for many, the return on that investment remains unclear.

The question worth asking is not whether logs matter - they do, fundamentally and irreversibly. Logs are the bedrock of observability. The question is whether the tools most organisations rely on to manage them were ever built for the environment they now operate in.

The architecture has changed. The tools have not.

Traditional log management solutions were designed for a different era - one defined by monolithic, on-premise applications with predictable, bounded data volumes. The migration to cloud-native and containerised architectures has fundamentally disrupted that model.

In practice, we routinely see organisations refactoring a traditional three-tier application for Kubernetes deployment, only to find that their log volume increases by a factor of 100 to 1,000. These are not edge cases. They are the predictable consequence of containerised, microservices-based architectures - where services spin up and tear down continuously, each generating its own telemetry stream.

Legacy platforms were not engineered to absorb this kind of scale efficiently. As a result, costs grow not because organisations are getting more value from their data, but because the underlying architecture cannot adapt without passing the burden back to the customer.

The hidden cost of manual correlation

Beyond the volume challenge, there is a subtler - but equally significant - productivity problem embedded in how most organisations actually use their log data.

In a traditional environment, correlating a log entry to a specific service, host, or business process requires manual effort. Engineers must trace transaction identifiers, cross-reference systems, and construct context through experience rather than tooling. In high-complexity cloud environments - where an incident may generate thousands of related log entries across dozens of interdependent services - this approach is no longer viable at the speed modern operations demand.

The consequence is reactive operations: teams spending their time interpreting noise rather than acting on insight. Incidents that should be resolved in minutes stretch to hours. The downstream impact - on customer experience, revenue continuity, and employee morale - is real, even if it rarely appears as a line item in the IT budget.

Consolidation as strategy, Not just cost control

There is a structural shift underway in how enterprise IT budgets are being organised. Siloed monitoring tools - separate solutions for infrastructure, application performance, real-user monitoring, and logging - are increasingly being consolidated under a single observability budget. This consolidation is partly financial, but it also reflects a growing recognition that siloed visibility produces siloed answers.

When log data exists independently of metrics, traces, and business events, the ability to understand causation - not just correlation - is severely limited. A spike in error logs means very little without the context of which service originated it, which downstream processes were affected, and what business transaction was disrupted as a result.

Modern observability platforms address this through automated topology mapping - the ability to continuously model the relationships between every component in a live environment and assign telemetry data to its source in real time. This is not a marginal improvement on traditional log management. It represents a different class of capability entirely.

Making the business case

For technology leaders seeking to modernise log management, the challenge is rarely technical. The harder conversation is with the business: why invest in changing something that, on the surface, appears to be working?

The answer lies in framing observability not as infrastructure overhead, but as a business intelligence capability. When logs, metrics, traces, and events are unified in a single platform - one accessible not only to engineers but to operations managers, business analysts, and executive stakeholders -the conversation shifts from "how do we keep the lights on" to "how do we use this data to drive outcomes."

Organisations that have made this transition consistently report measurable improvements: faster mean time to resolution, reduced operational overhead, and a shift from reactive to preventative operations. Critically, they also report that the total cost of their observability programme when rationalised onto a modern, unified platform is lower than the fragmented tooling it replaced.

Where to begin

Modernising log management does not require a wholesale rip-and-replace.
