Dematic's virtual event explores supply chain automation

Yesterday

Dematic is set to bring together prominent figures in the supply chain sector for a high-level discussion on logistics automation at its Virtual Showcase event.

The event will focus on the effect of automation on supply chains, with businesses experiencing benefits such as increased productivity, enhanced customer satisfaction, and improved organisational flexibility. Industry leaders from Bluebird Foods - PepsiCo, Drakes Supermarkets, and Unilab Pharmacy will share insights on their automation journeys, evaluating and implementing strategies tailored to meet specific supply chain needs.

Attendees will gain understanding into how these companies navigated shifting business requirements and managed supply chain changes. The discussions will also cover strategies for risk management and planning, along with change management processes for seamless integration of new systems.

Bluebird Foods - PepsiCo will share its experience with an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) that significantly increased its capacity. "The AS/RS has supported PepsiCo's commitment to minimising waste and promoting positive change for the planet and its people. It's allowing us to operate so much more efficiently and sustainably. We have seen productivity from the reallocation of resources, greater accuracy in our pallet packing with less damaged product, and, crucially, our site has reduced congestion and made a much safer place for our team," said Scott Blakey, National Logistics Manager, Bluebird Foods - PepsiCo, New Zealand.

Glenn Sutcliffe, General Manager of Warehousing & Distribution at Drakes Supermarkets, will highlight advancements in their South Australian warehouse's order-picking productivity due to automation. "You need to spend time understanding the products, understanding your business needs… if you have that partnership between the two (you and your automation supplier), it'll work. The (Dematic Goods-to-Person system) has taken up to 40% out of the cost of handling product out of every supermarket. We're picking at 700 units per hour (per picker). They're great numbers, very proud of them," he stated.

Albert D Cruz, Assistant Vice President for Logistics Management Division at Unilab, will address broader automation benefits. "If you're scared of automation, then you're scared of growth… Yet the advantage frequently outweighs the challenges. Start with a well-defined plan and concentrate on areas where automation can have the greatest impact," he explained.

The event will feature various industry experts, including Scott Blakey, Albert D Cruz, Glenn Sutcliffe, and John Hart, who will share their practical experiences in developing, implementing, and deriving benefits from warehouse automation.
