Chipotle invests in AI supply chain firm Lumachain

Mon, 21st Oct 2024

Lumachain, a Sydney-based AI supply chain platform, has received a minority investment from Chipotle Mexican Grill's USD $100 million Cultivate Next venture fund.

This strategic partnership seeks to advance the global food supply chain by enhancing transparency, safety, and sustainability, while delivering real-time insights from farm to plate. Lumachain's platform employs computer vision artificial intelligence to provide comprehensive visibility into food production operations, allowing producers to track the origin, location, and condition of individual food items.

Jamila Gordon, CEO and Founder of Lumachain, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to partner with Chipotle, a company known globally for its commitment to high-quality, ethical and sustainable food production. This investment will enable us to expand the reach of our platform, helping more producers and suppliers deliver safer, higher-quality products with complete transparency, benefiting both businesses and consumers."

Chipotle's Chief Customer and Technology Officer, Curt Garner, commented on the potential impact of Lumachain's technology, saying, "The visibility in real-time and quality data analytics that Lumachain's software provides could optimise the management and quality of perishable goods for the food service industry."

In Australia, JBS, the world's largest meat processor, has been an early adopter of Lumachain's technology, incorporating it into its JBS Farm Assurance Great Southern Beef programme. Through this implementation, JBS can offer a new level of transparency, as the AI platform allows customers to trace the premium beef back to its farm of origin.

Rob Ryan from JBS Southern recognised the value added by Lumachain's platform, stating, "Lumachain has provided a platform for JBS to add a new level of traceability with integrity to our Great Southern Beef programme. We can now provide our customers with complete transparency across the supply chain, and customers have been quick to realise the value of this innovation. Additionally, Lumachain's platform has enabled live inventory management and product condition tracking on a global scale, delivering benefits far beyond traceability alone."

Sean Starling, Head of Innovation & Industrial Engineering at JBS Southern, added insights on the collaboration, sharing, "Through a professional collaborative relationship, Lumachain and JBS have streamlined an approach to leverage AI and Data Analysis in our industry that results in the required customer outcomes along the length of the supply chain and a resulting informed Vendor, driven to meet these outcomes of the customer. I look forward to the outcome of the ten or more other joint initiatives we have underway with Lumachain."

This investment underscores Lumachain's burgeoning role in transforming the global food supply chain industry, with key industry players like Chipotle and JBS supporting Lumachain's potential to deliver significant advancements across the sector.
